Hierarch Dionysius the Great of Alexandria
епископ Александрийский 247–264/265
Also known as: Дионисий Великий
Hierarch Dionysius the Great, a disciple of Origen, Bishop of Alexandria, theologian and defender of Orthodoxy against heresies during the persecutions of Decius and Valerian.
Hierarch Dionysius of Alexandria, called the Great, was converted to Christianity in adulthood by the renowned teacher of the Church, Origen, and became his disciple. He later headed the Alexandrian catechetical school, and in 247 was consecrated Bishop of Alexandria. He labored greatly to defend Orthodoxy from heresies and strengthened his flock in firm confession of the true faith during the fierce persecutions of Emperors Decius (249–251) and Valerian (253–259), himself enduring exile. He left an extensive theological legacy. He died in 264 or 265.
