Martyr Dioscorus of Perga — a presbyter who suffered during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) in the city of Perga in Pamphylia together with the soldier Theodore, his mother Philippia, and the believing soldiers Socrates and Dionysius; he came to believe in Christ and, after brief torments, departed to the Lord.
During the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) in Pamphylia, in the city of Perga, a young man named Theodore was called up for military service, but the commander, learning of his Christian faith, demanded that he offer sacrifice to idols. Theodore firmly refused and was subjected to torture. A witness to his torments was the local presbyter Dioscorus, who, coming to believe in Christ upon seeing Theodore's steadfastness, peacefully departed to the Lord after brief torments. Theodore's mother, the martyr Philippia, was also seized and shared her son's fate. Two soldiers, Socrates and Dionysius, who had been ordered to bind Theodore to horses for torture, themselves came to believe in Christ when, together with him, they were thrown into a heated furnace and remained unharmed. All suffered for Christ in the city of Perga in Pamphylia. Their memory is kept on April 21/May 4.
