Martyr Dioscorides of Rome

According to a tradition recorded in a number of sources, the martyrs Crescens, Paul, and Dioscorides suffered for Christ in Rome around 326, dying in a heated furnace. However, the reliability and precise dating of this tradition are questioned by researchers: there are contradictory indications regarding the time and circumstances of death, and according to one reference source, the name of the martyr Dioscorides is absent from the modern official calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, which does not allow his veneration to be considered church-wide and universally accepted. A surviving 14th-century Serbian fresco (Church of the Pantocrator, Dečani Monastery, c. 1350) groups Dioscorides together with the martyrs Crescens and Paul, confirming the existence of his veneration at least in local tradition. Given the contradictory sources, the card retains an "uncertain" status pending more reliable information.
