Venerable, Hegumen Dius of Constantinople, Hegumen

Venerable Dius of Constantinople — an ascetic through whose labors a monastery arose near Constantinople, built with funds from Emperor Theodosius the Younger with the blessing of Patriarch Atticus of Constantinople (406-425), who also ordained the venerable one to the priesthood and appointed him hegumen of that monastery.
Venerable Dius labored near Constantinople in a discipline of strict fasting and prayer. Hearing of his ascetic life, Emperor Theodosius the Younger wished to build a monastery on the site of his labors and provided funds for this. The emperor, together with Patriarch Atticus of Constantinople (who occupied the see from 406 to 425), personally visited Venerable Dius to seek his blessing; the patriarch ordained the ascetic to the priesthood and made him hegumen of the newly established monastery. Venerable Dius peacefully reposed around 430. His memory is kept on July 19/August 1.
