Venerable Domnica of Carthage — a holy virgin from Carthage; having gone to Alexandria, she converted four pagan maidens to Christ and together with them, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Great (379-395), came to Constantinople, where she founded a women's monastic community.
Venerable Domnica was born in Carthage (North Africa) in the 4th century. Having gone to Alexandria, through her preaching she converted four pagan maidens to Christ, who together with her received baptism. Later, during the reign of the pious Emperor Theodosius the Great (379-395), Domnica together with her spiritual sisters came to Constantinople. There, with the assistance of the Patriarch of Constantinople, she founded a women's monastic community, which became one of the first centers of organized women's monasticism in the capital of the empire. Venerable Domnica became renowned for her strict ascetic life and peacefully departed to the Lord. Her memory is kept on January 8/21.
