Venerable Eleazar of Anzersk (Sevryukov)

Venerable Eleazar of Anzersk (in the world, the son of the merchant Athanasius Sevryukov of Kozelsk) — founder of the Holy Trinity Anzersky Skete of the Solovetsky Monastery (1612); a woodcarver who took part in decorating the iconostasis of the Transfiguration Cathedral; he foretold to Tsar Michael Feodorovich the birth of a son, the future Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich (1629).
Venerable Eleazar was born into the family of the Kozelsk merchant Athanasius Sevryukov. At an early age he entered the Solovetsky Monastery, where he took monastic vows from Hegumen Irinarch of Solovki. At the monastery he learned the art of woodcarving and took part in decorating the iconostasis of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Seeking stricter solitude, in 1612 he settled on Anzer Island, where he founded the Holy Trinity Anzersky Skete, introducing a strict skete rule there. Venerable Eleazar foretold to Tsar Michael Feodorovich the birth of a long-awaited heir; in 1629 Tsarevich Alexei (the future Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich) was born, after which the grateful sovereign generously patronized the Anzersky Skete for the rest of his life. Venerable Eleazar died on January 13, 1656. He is venerated in the Synaxis of the Saints of Solovki. His memory is kept on January 13/26.
