Forefather Enosh — the son of Seth, grandson of Adam, who lived, according to the Book of Genesis, 905 years; with his birth, according to the biblical narrative, people began to call upon the name of the Lord; patristic tradition calls him a righteous man, a witness to the emergence of hope in God among the first generation of humanity.
Forefather Enosh is mentioned in the Book of Genesis as the son of Seth (the third son of Adam) and grandson of the first man Adam (Genesis 4:26, 5:6-11). According to the Masoretic text, Seth was 105 years old when his son Enosh was born. The biblical narrative connects Enosh's birth with the beginning of people calling upon the name of the Lord: "Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord" (Genesis 4:26). In patristic exegesis, the righteous generation of Enosh is contrasted with the sinful offspring of the fratricide Cain: Enosh is venerated as a righteous man who witnessed the emergence of hope in God among the first generation of humanity, and according to some interpretations, as a prophet upon whom the Holy Spirit descended. He continued the godly line of Seth, leading through generations of forefathers to Abraham. According to the genealogy of Genesis chapter 5, he lived 905 years. Like the other Old Testament righteous ones, he has no separate extensive vita and is venerated by the Church collectively, as part of the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers.
