Synaxis Synaxis of Estonian Saints

Synaxis of the Saints of the Estonian Land — established July 22, 2002 by Patriarch Alexy II at the petition of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate; includes the Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, Hieromartyr Isidore of Yuriev with 72 martyrs, venerable ascetics of the Pskov Caves, Righteous John of Kronstadt, and 20th-century new martyrs of the Estonian land.
The Synaxis of the Saints of the Estonian Land was established on July 22, 2002, by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia, at the petition of the hierarchy of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, headed by Metropolitan Cornelius of Tallinn and All Estonia. The first celebration took place on December 21, 2002, at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Tallinn. The synaxis includes saints of various eras connected with the Estonian land: the Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky (†1263); Hieromartyr Isidore, presbyter of Yuriev, with 72 martyrs drowned in the Omovzha River for confessing the faith (†1472); Venerables Jonah, Vassa, and Serapion of the Pskov Caves (15th c.); Venerable Martyr Cornelius of the Pskov Caves (†1570); Hieromartyr Arseny (Matseyevich), Metropolitan of Rostov (†1772); Righteous John of Kronstadt (†1908); and a host of hieromartyrs and martyrs who suffered in the 20th century, including Hieromartyr John Kochurov (†1917), Hieromartyrs Alexander Volkov, Demetrius Chistoserdov, and Sergius Florinsky (†1918), Hieromartyr Platon (Kulbush), Bishop of Reval, with the martyrs Michael Bleive and Nicholas Bezhanitsky (†1919), Venerable Confessor Agathangel (Preobrazhensky), Metropolitan (†1928), Hieromartyrs Nicholas Simo (†1931) and Carp Elb (†1937), and others. The roster of the synaxis has been repeatedly updated by the Holy Synod. The feast is kept on November 18/December 1.
