Hierarch Eutychius Of Constantinople

Hierarch Eutychius was born ca. 512 in the village of "Divine" in Phrygia; his father Alexander was a soldier, and his mother Synkletikia was the daughter of a priest from whom the saint received his early education. Under Emperor Justinian I he was sent to the Fifth Ecumenical Council (553) as representative of the Metropolitan of Amasea; St. Patriarch Mennas of Constantinople predicted that Eutychius would be his successor. In 552 he was elevated to the patriarchal see. For refusing to support Justinian's edict on Aphthartodocetism (the teaching of the incorruptibility of Christ's body before the Resurrection), he was deposed in 565 and exiled for 12 years. In 577, after the death of Patriarch John Scholasticus, he was restored to the See of Constantinople. He died on the feast of Pascha, on Thomas Sunday, in 582, and was buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles. In 1246 his relics were translated from Constantinople to Venice.
