Righteous Eudokimos of Cappadocia

Righteous Eudokimos was born in Cappadocia into a noble Christian family personally known to Emperor Theophilos, who appointed him archon (governor) of the Charsianon theme. He became renowned for justice, generous charity, and a vow of strict chastity — a rare example of sanctity attained in the world, in military and civil service, without taking monastic vows. He died young, around age 33, having asked to be buried in ordinary clothing without special honors. About a year and a half later his body was found incorrupt and fragrant, which began his veneration; his relics were translated to Constantinople, where numerous healings occurred through them. His memory is kept on July 31/August 13.
