Patriarch of Constantinople (447–449) and confessor; convened the Council of 448 which condemned the heresy of Eutyches (Monophysitism), for which he was deposed and beaten at the "Robber Council" of Ephesus in 449 and died of his injuries.
Hierarch Flavian was a presbyter and keeper of the sacred vessels in the Cathedral Church of Constantinople. After the death of Patriarch Proclus in 447, he was elevated to the patriarchal throne. In 448 he convened a Local Council of forty bishops in Constantinople, at which he condemned and deposed the archimandrite Eutyches for the heresy of Monophysitism (the teaching of a single nature in Christ). In 449, Emperor Theodosius II the Younger convened a large council at Ephesus under the presidency of Dioscorus of Alexandria, which went down in history as the "Robber Council" — it restored Eutyches and deposed Flavian, sentencing him to exile. Insolent Eutychian monks beat the hierarch savagely; three days after the beating he gave up his soul to the Lord. The Church honors him as a confessor who suffered for the Orthodox teaching of the two natures in Christ.
