Hierarch Gennadius I, Patriarch of Constantinople (458–471), a native of Antioch — a zealous defender of Orthodoxy against the Eutychian (Monophysite) heresy, and author of homilies and a commentary on the Prophet Daniel.
Hierarch Gennadius I was a native of Antioch; by the time of his election to the See of Constantinople in 458, he was a cleric of the Church of Hagia Sophia. He governed the Church of Constantinople for 13 years (458–471), being a zealous defender of Orthodoxy against the Eutychian heresy, which denied the fullness of Christ's human nature. He authored a "Circular Letter Against Simony," approved by the Council of 459, as well as homilies and a commentary on the Book of the Prophet Daniel. He was renowned for his strict ascetic life and concern for the purity of the faith.
