Venerable Gregory of Golutvin (of Kolomna)

Venerable Gregory was a hieromonk of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in the 1370s to early 1380s. At the request of Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoi, St. Sergius of Radonezh sent Gregory to found a monastery near Kolomna in commemoration of the victory at Kulikovo Field over Mamai. Thus arose the Epiphany Old Golutvin Monastery, whose first abbot was St. Gregory; he personally took part in laying the foundation of the monastery's Epiphany Cathedral. He died, tradition holds, on February 13, 1405 (the exact date is noted in sources as conjectural) and was buried beneath the cathedral's altar; excavations in 1969-1970 confirmed the location of the burial. The "Orthodox Encyclopedia" notes as a possible, though unproven, hypothesis the identification of this Gregory with an archimandrite of the Kolomna monasteries who became Bishop of Kolomna in 1392 and took part in an episcopal consecration in 1396 and the Moscow Council of 1401 — the source explicitly states that the basis for this identification is the absence of any record of another Archimandrite Gregory, not direct proof.
