Venerable Gury Shalochsky

Venerable Gury labored together with the Hieromartyr Euphrosynus of Sinozersk and St. Philaret near the Chagodoshcha River beginning around 1592/1598 ("the Old Hermitage"). Around 1603, with the blessing of Patriarch Job, he founded the Shaloch Dormition Hermitage at the confluence of the Shaloch and Mologa rivers, about 35 versts from Ustyuzhna Zhelezopolskaya, and became its first abbot. He died around 1603 (other accounts place his death shortly before the monastery's destruction by Polish forces in 1613). The venerable's relics rested beneath the hermitage's stone Nativity church, built in 1837; the burial site was desecrated in April 1936, and by 2012 a memorial cross had been erected on the site. His individual commemoration is kept on Nov 15/28, and he is also included in the Synaxes of Novgorod and Vologda Saints.
