Venerable Herman, tradition holds, was a Greek hieromonk who came to the Novgorod lands with the early Orthodox missionaries and, together with St. Sergius, founded a monastery on the island of Valaam on Lake Ladoga, converting the local Karelian and Finno-Ugric tribes to Christ. The exact dating of the monastery's founding and the lives of its founders remains a matter of long-standing scholarly dispute: enduring church tradition places the founding in the 10th century, while a marginal note in the Novgorod Sophia Chronicle ("in the year 1329 the elder Sergius began to dwell on the island of Valaam on Lake Ladoga") and another note on Herman joining in 1393 point to the 14th century. The official synodal position of the Russian Church states the saints "reposed around 1353."
