Venerable Martyr Adrian of Poshekhonye, Yaroslavl

The Venerable Martyr Adrian was born in the early 16th century in Rostov. He took monastic vows at the Kornilievo-Komel Monastery under Abbot Lavrenty (1538-1548). He later founded the Dormition Monastery near Poshekhonye. On the night of March 5-6, 1550, during Great Lent, armed robbers (some accounts say bandits, others residents of the neighboring village of Beloye) broke into the still-unfinished monastery in search of treasure, tortured Adrian, and strangled him. His body was secretly buried. His relics were uncovered on November 19, 1626, and solemnly translated into the monastery church under Patriarch Filaret.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION: the original entry contained a serious contamination — the structural dates "3rd-4th century" and feast_days (Aug 26/Sep 8/Feb 26) exactly matched the dates of the Great Martyr Adrian of Nicomedia (processed in an earlier batch) — a classic name-substring "Adrian" collision bug. The correct dates for Adrian of Poshekhonye are March 5/18 (death) and November 19/December 2 (uncovering of relics); he is also included in the Synaxis of Rostov-Yaroslavl Saints (May 23/June 5). The category has been corrected from "hieromartyr" to "venerable martyr" — he was a monk-abbot killed by robbers, not a priest who suffered for confessing the faith under persecution.
