Hieromartyr Vasily Nadezhdin, a Moscow priest of the Maroseyka (Fr. Mechev) spiritual tradition — arrested in 1928 for leading a Christian youth circle, he died of typhus in a camp hospital in Kem (Karelia) on February 19, 1930; canonized among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 2000.
The Hieromartyr Vasily was born on January 12, 1895, in Moscow, the son of a church warden. From age 14 he sang and directed the choir at the Church of the Intercession on Bolshoy Levshinsky Lane. He graduated from the Zaikonospassky Theological School (1910) and the Moscow Theological Seminary (1916). In June-July 1921 he was ordained deacon and then priest, serving as rector of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker at Solomennaya Storozhka in Moscow.
He was close to the spiritual tradition of Maroseyka — the priests Fr. Alexei and Fr. Sergei Mechev; while imprisoned he had a significant conversation with Fr. Sergei Mechev. He was arrested on October 28, 1928, as the leader of an "anti-Soviet" Christian youth circle, and sentenced to 3 years in labor camps. He died on February 19, 1930, in a camp hospital in Kem (Karelia, part of the Solovki camp system) of typhus and gangrene that developed after an injection; before his death he received Holy Communion.
He was canonized by the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000, among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
