Venerable Joasaph of Kamenny (Spaso-Kubensky)

Venerable Joasaph was born as Prince Andrei, the son of Prince Dmitri Vasilievich of Zaozerye and Princess Maria — a junior branch of the Beloozero princely house descending from the holy right-believing Prince Theodore Rostislavich of Yaroslavl. At the age of 20 he took monastic vows at the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery on Lake Kubenskoye (Vologda land), receiving the name Joasaph.

Under the spiritual guidance of the elder Gregory (later Bishop of Rostov), he led a most strict ascetic life — near-total seclusion in his cell, extreme fasting (in his final year eating only once a week). After five years of such asceticism, having bidden farewell to the brotherhood and completed his prayer rule, he quietly reposed with prayer on his lips on September 10, 1453, before reaching the age of 21.

He is venerated as a wonderworker; local veneration at the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery later grew into church-wide veneration.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION: the original stub erroneously classified the venerable one among the hieromartyrs (category hieromartyr) with a fictitious "1st-4th century" period — in fact St. Joasaph was neither a priest nor a martyr: he reposed peacefully at age 20 after a short monastic life. The category has been corrected to "venerable."
