Archbishop Juvenaly (Maslovsky), Archbishop of Ryazan

The Hieromartyr Juvenaly was born on January 15/27, 1878, in the town of Livny, Oryol province, as Evgeny Alexandrovich Maslovsky. He graduated from the Kazan Theological Academy (1903) and took monastic vows. He was consecrated Bishop of Kashira (1914), then successively held the sees of Bishop of Tula and Belyov (1917-1920), Archbishop of Kursk and Oboyan (1923-1925), Archbishop of Ryazan and Zaraysk (1928-1929), and Archbishop of Ryazan and Shatsk (1929-1937).

He was first arrested in Kursk in 1924, sentenced to 3 years at Solovki. He was arrested again in Ryazan on January 22, 1936, and sentenced to 5 years in labor camps (Siblag). In September 1937 he was arrested for the last time on a fabricated case involving an alleged "Union for the Salvation of Russia." He was shot on October 12/25, 1937, at Kashtachnaya Hill in Tomsk and buried in a common grave.

He was glorified locally by the Ryazan diocese on June 23, 1992 (with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II), and canonized church-wide by the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000, among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.

IMPORTANT IMAGE WARNING: both existing images are Byzantine/medieval-style frescoes with a simple inscription "St. Juvenal" and no markers indicating Ryazan or the 20th century — stylistically they correspond far more closely to the ANCIENT saint, St. Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem (5th century, participant in the Third and Fourth Ecumenical Councils, feast July 2), than to Archbishop Juvenaly (Maslovsky).
