Hieromartyr Nikolai (Evdokimovich) Vostorgov, presbyter — a rural priest of Vladimir province, arrested in 1929 in connection with a dispute over church property, who died of typhus in the Solovki camp on February 1, 1930. NOT to be confused with the well-known Moscow missionary-preacher Archpriest Ioann Vostorgov (executed in 1918) — these are two different, unrelated people.
The Hieromartyr Nikolai was born on November 21, 1875, in the settlement of Nikologorsky, Vyazniki district, Vladimir province, the only son among five children of the psalm-reader Evdokim Mikhailovich Vostorgov. He graduated from the Vladimir Theological Seminary and served as a psalm-reader at the Church of St. Nicholas in the settlement of Goritsy, Murom district, from 1897; that same year he married Tatiana, and the family had six children (five daughters and a son).
In 1915 he was ordained deacon in the village of Dedovo; in April 1927 he was ordained priest to serve in the village of Golyanishchevo, and in June 1928 was transferred to the village of Chulkovo in Vachsky district.
In early August 1929 he was arrested in connection with a dispute over church property: after parishioners protested the closure/seizure of the church, Fr. Nikolai was charged along with them with "organizing mass disorder." He was sent to the Solovki Special Purpose Camp, where he contracted typhus and died in the camp hospital on February 1, 1930.
He has been glorified among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Hieromartyr Nikolai (Evdokimovich) Vostorgov should not be confused with the much more famous Archpriest Ioann Ivanovich Vostorgov (1864-1918) — a renowned Moscow missionary-preacher who was shot in 1918. These are two different, entirely unrelated people, despite the shared surname.
