Archbishop Prokopy (Titov), Archbishop of Kherson and Odessa

The Hieromartyr Prokopy was born on December 25, 1877, in Kuznetsk, Tomsk province, the son of a priest. He graduated from the Tomsk Theological Seminary (1897) and the Kazan Theological Academy (1901). He was tonsured a monk on August 21, 1901, and ordained hieromonk on August 23, 1901. He taught at and administered various seminaries; on August 30, 1914, he was consecrated Bishop of Elisavetgrad, vicar of the Kherson-Odessa diocese.

He participated in the 1917-1918 Local Council that restored the Patriarchate; he temporarily headed the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Petrograd (1917-1918); in 1921 he was appointed to the Odessa-Kherson see; he was raised to Archbishop of Odessa and Kherson in June 1925; he was a member of Patriarch Tikhon's Synod (1925).

He was arrested in 1923; released in 1925, he went to Moscow; arrested again in November 1925, on May 26, 1926, he was sentenced to 3 years at the Solovki Special Purpose Camp, where the imprisoned clergy chose him as the camp's "second ruling bishop." In December 1928, without new charges, he was sentenced to a further 3 years of exile in the Urals together with Bishop Amvrosy (Polyansky). Further arrests followed in 1934 and finally in 1937.

He was arrested for the last time in the Kamyshin/Turtkul area; an NKVD troika sentenced him to death on October 28, 1937; he was shot on November 10/23, 1937, in Turtkul (Karakalpak ASSR) together with priest Ioann Skadovsky, and buried in an unmarked grave.

He was glorified by the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1996; he was canonized church-wide by the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000, among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.

CRITICAL CORRECTION: the original dates "c. 280-303" and feast of July 8/21 were a direct contamination — they are exactly the traditional dates of the ANCIENT Great Martyr Procopius of Caesarea (Scythopolis, executed July 8, 303, under the prefect Flavian) — a classic name-collision bug on "Procopius." The correct data has been established: Archbishop Prokopy (Titov), 1877-1937, shot November 10/23. MERGE: the duplicate entry hieromartyr_procopius_of_kharkov ("Procopius of Kharkov") has been merged here — no separate, documented New Martyr by that name exists; the real hieromartyr who served in Kharkov in this era is a completely different person, Archbishop Alexander (Petrovsky) of Kharkov, likely already represented by a separate entry.
