Martyr Valerius of Melitene

Martyr Valerius was a soldier in the Armenian city of Melitene. Together with 31-32 other soldiers, led by Hieromartyr Hieron, he refused, by decree of Emperor Diocletian, to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, for which the entire group was seized and beheaded around 298.

IMPORTANT CATEGORY CORRECTION: the original entry erroneously classified Valerius among the hieromartyrs (category hieromartyr) — however, he was a rank-and-file soldier, not clergy. One of the existing images (icon caption "Holy Martyr Valerius") independently confirms the correct category of "martyr." The category has been corrected to "martyr."

The identification as Valerius of Melitene rests on analysis of the surviving images — the iconographic type (a martyr in a red cloak with a cross) and a paired image with Martyr Eugene (also a soldier from the group of 32 Melitene martyrs) — this identification is probable but not absolutely certain, given the existence of other ancient saints named Valerius (e.g., Bishop Valerius of Trier, Bishop Valerius of Saragossa — both of whom died peacefully, making them even less consistent with the title "martyr").
