Holy Hierarch Honorius, 5th Archbishop of Canterbury — a native of Rome, one of the last surviving members of the Gregorian mission to Britain, consecrated by St. Paulinus of York in 627; he appointed St. Felix as first bishop of the East Angles and ordained St. Ithamar as the first Anglo-Saxon bishop (Rochester).
Holy Hierarch Honorius, a Roman by birth, appears to have been part of a later wave of the Gregorian mission to Britain (sent by Pope Gregory the Great), although Bede the Venerable counts him among the last surviving members of the original 597 mission.
After the death of Archbishop Justus, he was elected to the see of Canterbury; he went to St. Paulinus, Bishop of York, and was consecrated by him at Lincoln in 627. He held the see for about 26 years.
He appointed St. Felix of Burgundy as the first bishop of the East Angles (the see later at Dommoc); around 644, after St. Paulinus's death, he ordained St. Ithamar — the first ethnic Anglo-Saxon to hold an episcopal see — as Bishop of Rochester.
Under Archbishop Honorius, Pope Honorius I of Rome sent a letter to Britain along with the pallium, granting the archbishops of Canterbury and York mutual authority to consecrate each other's successors without the arduous journey to Rome — this letter is quoted in full by Bede the Venerable in his "Ecclesiastical History of the English People" (Book II, Chapter XVIII).
He died on September 30, 653.
