Hierarch Ignatius, Patriarch of Constantinople (847–858, 867–877) — son of Emperor Michael I Rangabe, forcibly tonsured a monk in his youth; he held the patriarchal see twice and was subjected to deposition and exile for condemning the lawlessness of the regent Bardas.
Hierarch Ignatius came from the imperial family — he was the son of Emperor Michael I Rangabe. In his youth he was forcibly tonsured a monk after his father's deposition, which strengthened him in faith and piety; in time he became an abbot and was then elected Patriarch of Constantinople (July 4, 847 – October 23, 858, and again November 23, 867 – October 23, 877). He fearlessly condemned the lawlessness of Bardas, the emperor's uncle, for which he was deposed, tormented, and sent into exile. He was later restored to the see.
