Venerable Ilya (Elias) Muromets of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Ilya Muromets of the Kiev Caves — a 12th-century monk of the Kiev Caves Lavra, traditionally identified with the legendary warrior-hero of Russian epic poetry (byliny); he took monastic vows late in life, possibly under Abbot Polycarp (1164-1182); he died around 1188. A 1988 forensic examination of his relics found numerous old battle wounds and an unusually tall stature for the era (c. 177 cm). He was canonized in 1643.
Venerable Ilya, nicknamed Chobitok, was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery in the 12th century. Folk tradition, and to some extent scholarly tradition, identifies him with the legendary warrior-hero Ilya Muromets of Russian epic poetry (byliny) — a warrior who took monastic vows late in life, presumably at the Kiev Caves community under Abbot Polycarp (1164-1182), after a long career of military service.
In 1988, an interdepartmental commission of the Ukrainian SSR Ministry of Health conducted a forensic examination of the venerable one's incorrupt relics in the Near (Antoniev) Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra, using precision Japanese equipment. Findings: the buried man's height was about 177 cm — unusually tall for the era; the skeleton shows signs of a congenital or early-onset spinal disease and limb deformities (which some connect to the bylina motif of Ilya being paralyzed until age 33, then miraculously healed); numerous old battle wounds were found, including one probably fatal — it is suggested the venerable one died during a siege of Kiev (some sources say 1204, others c. 1188). The fingers of his right hand remain positioned as if making the sign of the cross, interpreted as a sign that he died at prayer. A separate relic fragment (a finger) is kept at the Transfiguration Monastery in Murom.
He was glorified among the venerable ones in 1643, among the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Caves.
IMPORTANT CORRECTION (MERGE OF THREE DUPLICATE ENTRIES): the database originally contained THREE separate entries for the same saint — "ilya_muromets," "ilia_muromets_of_kiev_caves," and "venerable_ilya_muromets" (the last containing an obvious duplication artifact, "Ilya Muromets 2," in its text). All three have been merged into this entry. A serious contamination has also been corrected: in two of the three original entries, the life period was given as "9th century BC" with feast_days of July 20/August 2 — this is precisely the dates and era of the Old Testament Prophet Elijah the Tishbite, erroneously transferred to the entry of the warrior-monk due to the shared name "Ilya/Elijah." The venerable one's correct commemoration is December 19/January 1 (repose) and September 28/October 11 (Synaxis of the Near Caves Fathers).
