Right-believing John (Branković), Despot of Srem — son of the Serbian saints Despot Stefan Branković and Righteous Angelina, ruler of the region of Srem (co-ruler from 1493, sole ruler from 1496), renowned for his piety and generosity toward Serbian monasteries; buried beside his father at Krušedol Monastery.
Right-believing John (Jovan) Branković was the son of the Serbian saints Despot Stefan Branković and Righteous Angelina, who were raised in Italy, where the family fled from Ottoman persecution. From 1493 he was co-ruler of Srem together with his elder brother George (Đorđe); from early 1496, after George abdicated power and took monastic vows, he became sole Despot of Srem. He died suddenly of illness on December 10, 1502.
He was buried in the Church of the Apostle Luke at Kupinovo beside his father. In 1512 his relics, together with his father's, were translated to Krušedol Monastery, built by his mother, Righteous Angelina. He is venerated for his piety, generosity toward Serbian monasteries, and resistance to both Ottoman raids and Uniate pressure from the Catholic Church. He is included in the Synaxis of Serbian Saints.
His feast is kept on December 10/23.
