Righteous John of Yarenga

Righteous John was a monk of the Solovetsky Transfiguration Monastery during the abbacy of St. Philip (Kolychev), later Metropolitan of Moscow. Together with his companion Righteous Longin (see the separate entry jona_yarengsky), he set out on monastery business aboard a vessel laden with building materials; en route they were caught in a storm on the White Sea, and both drowned (dated variously, by different sources, to 1544/45 or 1561).

Their incorrupt bodies were later found washed ashore at the mouth of the Sosnovka River near the village of Yarenga, about 120 versts from the monastery, and placed in a chapel of St. Nicholas. Following an investigation of miracles begun in 1625, their relics were solemnly translated to a newly built church on July 2, 1638 — this event marks the beginning of their joint commemoration.

They are included in the Synaxis of Novgorod Saints (since 1831), the Synaxis of Karelian Saints (1974), the Synaxis of Solovetsky Saints (1993), and the Synaxis of Saints of the Arkhangelsk Metropolia (2018).

IMPORTANT NOTE: the "blessed_john_of_yalang" image, previously added via automatic synchronization without visual verification, upon inspection turned out to depict an entirely different saint (captioned "St. ... of Kazan") and has been excluded.
