Righteous Jonah (Atamansky) of Odessa
14 сентября 1855 — †30 мая 1924
Also known as: Иона Атаманский, протоиерей Иона Моисеевич Атаманский
Righteous Jonah (Atamansky), Archpriest of Odessa — rector of the Port St. Nicholas Church in Odessa, who converted around 200 Stundist sectarians to Christ; glorified as a locally venerated saint of the Odessa diocese in 1995.
Righteous Jonah (secular name Iona Moiseyevich Atamansky) was born on September 14, 1855, in Odessa, in the Slobodka-Romanovka district. His father, a deacon, died when the boy was three.
He served as rector of the Port St. Nicholas Church in Odessa, becoming known as a zealous pastor and spiritual father. While serving as a missionary in the village of Kardashovka under Archbishop Nikanor, he converted around 200 Stundist sectarians to Christ. He reposed on May 30, 1924, in Odessa.
He was glorified as a locally venerated saint of the Odessa diocese by decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on September 8, 1995.
IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS: the original stub erroneously called him "Archbishop of Odessa" — it was established that he was an archpriest (parish rector), not a bishop; the only real, individually canonized "Jonah of Odessa" is precisely Righteous Jonah (Atamansky). The BC era contamination has also been corrected to AD, and the date in the feast_days field ("September 22/October 5," belonging to the Old Testament Prophet Jonah) has been replaced with his repose date, May 17/30.
