Venerable Jonah of Pertominsk

Venerable Jonah of Pertominsk — a monk of the Solovetsky Monastery, disciple of St. Philip (Kolychev); together with his companion Venerable Vassian, he drowned in 1561 during a storm in Unskaya Bay of the White Sea while transporting building materials; their incorrupt bodies became the foundation of the Pertominsky Monastery.
Venerable Jonah was a monk of the Solovetsky Transfiguration Monastery, a disciple of St. Philip (Kolychev), later Metropolitan of Moscow. Together with his companion Venerable Vassian of Pertominsk, while transporting lime and building materials from the mouth of the Northern Dvina to Solovki, he was caught in a storm on the White Sea in Unskaya Bay and drowned in 1561.
Their bodies were found incorrupt and buried by local peasants; both later appeared in a vision to the elder Mamant of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, at whose direction a chapel was built over their burial site in 1599. In 1623 the hieromonk Jacob founded the Transfiguration Pertominsky Monastery on the White Sea coast at the site of their repose (the same monastery later renowned for Peter the Great's survival of a shipwreck there in 1694).
They are venerated inseparably as "Wonderworkers of Solovki and Pertominsk," patrons of sailors and fishermen.
IMPORTANT CONTAMINATION CORRECTION: the original stub erroneously listed "era: BC" and a commemoration date of "September 22/October 5" — both contaminated from the Old Testament Prophet Jonah (the same error found throughout this batch's namesake cluster). The correct dates have been established: June 12/25 (primary) and June 5/18 (uncovering of relics). The category has been corrected from righteous to venerable.
