Venerable Joseph of Volokolamsk (Volotsky)

Venerable Joseph was born on November 14, 1440, in the village of Yazvishche-Pokrovskoye near Volokolamsk. At 20 he took monastic vows under Venerable Pafnuty of Borovsk, whose monastery he later headed.

Dissatisfied with the state of monastic discipline, in 1479 he founded his own monastery near Volokolamsk with an unusually strict communal rule — common ownership of property, complete renunciation of personal possessions, and rigorous liturgical and labor discipline.

He became the chief opponent of the "Judaizer heresy," collaborating with Archbishop Gennady of Novgorod; his principal polemical-theological work, "The Enlightener" (Prosvetitel) — a historical account of the heresy together with 16 chapters of doctrinal refutation — played a key role in the heretics' condemnation at the Church councils of 1502-1504.

He also became a central figure as leader of the "Possessor" (Josephite) party in the famous historical controversy with the "Non-possessors" — the circle of Venerable Nil Sorsky — over the permissibility of monastic land ownership: Joseph maintained that monastic property was necessary to sustain charitable institutions, education, and a properly staffed clergy, while the Non-possessors, influenced by the hesychast tradition, insisted on monastic poverty and inner contemplative life. This controversy shaped the character of Church-State relations in Muscovite Russia for decades, including Joseph's own developed theory of the divine origin of tsarist authority.

He reposed on September 9, 1515, and was buried by the altar of the Dormition church of the monastery he had founded.

His feast is kept on September 9/22 (repose) and October 18/31 (uncovering of relics).
