Great Martyr Ketevan Of Georgia

Great Martyr Ketevan, born a princess of the Bagrationi house, was the wife of King David I of Kakheti (r. 1601-1602). After his death she governed Kakheti as regent, repelled an attempted usurpation by her brother-in-law Constantine, and secured the throne for her son Teimuraz I.

In 1614, seeking to avert a Persian invasion of Kakheti, she went as a hostage to the court of Shah Abbas I and was imprisoned in Shiraz, where she spent about ten years in captivity. When the Shah demanded she renounce Christ and accept Islam, the queen refused: "Neither death nor life shall separate me from Christ my God." On the night of September 12/13, 1624, she was subjected to cruel torture — her body burned with red-hot pincers, a red-hot iron cauldron placed on her head — and died a martyr.

Part of her relics were secretly smuggled out by Portuguese Augustinian missionaries who witnessed the execution: one portion was buried at Alaverdi Monastery in Georgia, another was brought to the Augustinian monastery of St. Augustine in Old Goa, India. After the ruin of the Goa church, this portion of the relics was lost for centuries; a joint Georgian-Indian archaeological expedition (from 1989, intensified from 2004) located the chapel described in Portuguese sources and recovered bone fragments in 2005-2006. Mitochondrial DNA analysis (Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, with the Estonian Biocentre, results c. 2013-2015) found haplogroup U1b — rare in India but characteristic of Georgia — confirming the find's authenticity. In 2017 the relics were brought to Georgia for six months of veneration; on July 9, 2021, India's Foreign Minister formally handed the relics over to Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.

Her feast is kept on September 13/26.
