Synaxis of Kola Saints — a joint commemoration of the ascetics of the Kola Peninsula (Venerable Trifon of Pechenga, Venerable Theodoritus of Kola, Venerable Varlaam of Keret, Hieromartyr Herman of Pechenga with 116 slain brethren of the monastery (1589), Venerable Euthymius of Karelia, and others, including 20th-century new martyrs), established in 2003 with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II; in 2021 the feast date was moved from December 15/28 to December 16/29 to avoid coinciding with the separate feast day of Venerable Trifon of Pechenga.
The Synaxis of Kola Saints unites the memory of ascetics whose service or martyric struggle is connected with the Kola Peninsula (the far north of Russia, Murmansk region): Venerable Trifon of Pechenga (†1583), Venerable Theodoritus, Archimandrite of Kola (†1571), Venerable Varlaam of Keret (16th c.), Venerable Jonah of Pechenga, Hieromartyr Herman of Pechenga (†1589) with 116 monks of the Pechenga monastery killed by a Swedish detachment in 1589, Venerable Euthymius of Karelia (†1435), the ascetics of Kashkarantsy (15th-17th c.), and 20th-century new martyrs Moses Kozhin and Theodore Abrosimov.
The Synaxis was established in 2003 with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II, timed to the feast day of Venerable Trifon of Pechenga. It was originally celebrated on December 15/28; on November 10, 2021, at the petition of Metropolitan Mitrofan of Murmansk and Bishop Tarasy of Severomorsk, the date was moved by Patriarch Kirill to December 16/29 — to avoid coinciding with the separate feast day of Venerable Trifon himself, significant for both dioceses of the Murmansk Metropolia. The named roster of the Synaxis was approved by the Holy Synod on May 16, 2023.
