Synaxis of Kostroma Saints — a joint commemoration of the saints who shone forth in the Kostroma land (Venerable Abraham of Galich, Hierarch Gennady of Kostroma, Venerable Cornelius of Komel, Venerable Macarius of Zheltovodsk and Unzha, Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, the Royal Passion-Bearers, 20th-century new martyrs, and others), established in 1981 with the blessing of Patriarch Pimen and first celebrated on January 23/February 5, 1982.
The Synaxis of Kostroma Saints unites the memory of ascetics whose service or struggle is connected with the Kostroma land — one of the spiritual centers of the Russian land, home to the Ipatiev Monastery, which became the cradle of the Romanov dynasty (1613).
The Synaxis includes: Venerable Abraham of Galich (Chukhloma), Hierarch Gennady of Kostroma and Lyubimograd, Venerable Cornelius of Komel, Venerable Macarius of Zheltovodsk and Unzha, Hierarch Dionysius of Suzdal, Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, the Royal Passion-Bearers — Emperor Nicholas II and his family (canonized 2000, their veneration in the Kostroma Synaxis connected with the Ipatiev Monastery's history as the site of the first Romanov's call to the throne), numerous 20th-century new martyrs and confessors, including Archbishop Nikodim (Krotkov) of Kostroma, as well as Hierarchs Ignatius (Brianchaninov) and Mitrofan of Voronezh.
The Synaxis was established in 1981 with the blessing of Patriarch Pimen; the first celebration was held on January 23/February 5, 1982, timed to the feast day of Hierarch Gennady of Kostroma.
Its feast is kept on January 23/February 5.
