Forefather Lamech, Forefather (son of Methuselah)

Forefather Lamech was the son of Methuselah, father of righteous Noah, the eighth generation of Adam's descendants in the genealogy set out in Genesis chapter 5 (Gen. 5:25-31). According to the Masoretic text he lived 777 years. At his son's birth he prophetically declared: "this same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed" (Gen. 5:29) — interpreted in tradition as a foreshadowing of deliverance through righteous Noah.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION ON THE SHARED NAME: the Book of Genesis mentions TWO different men named Lamech, important not to confuse. One is a descendant of Cain (Gen. 4:18-24), son of Methushael (a related but differently spelled Hebrew name), known as the first polygamist (wives Adah and Zillah) and author of the boastful "Song of the Sword" about seventy-sevenfold vengeance; his sons were Jabal (ancestor of nomadic herdsmen), Jubal (ancestor of musicians), and Tubal-Cain (ancestor of metalworkers). This Cainite Lamech and his entire line were destroyed in the Flood and are NOT part of Christ's genealogy; no authoritative source (including the Orthodox Encyclopedia) grants him the status of righteous one, forefather, or liturgical commemoration — patristic tradition (St. John Chrysostom, Blessed Augustine) consistently treats his polygamy and offspring as an example of the moral decline of the Cainite line.

The second is the Sethite Lamech, son of Methuselah, father of Noah — and it is he who is represented in this entry. He belongs to the blessed line of Seth, extending through Noah, Shem, and Abraham to the genealogy of the Savior in the flesh, and is genuinely commemorated by the Church on the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers.

NOTE ON THE ORIGIN OF THE ERROR: the original stub erroneously attributed to this entry the biography of the Cainite Lamech (sons Jabal/Jubal/Tubal-Cain, polygamy) while retaining the liturgical category "righteous"/commemoration on the Sunday of Forefathers, which in fact belong exclusively to the Sethite Lamech, father of Noah. The likely cause of the confusion is that the Synodal translation renders both distinct Hebrew names, Methushael (father of the Cainite Lamech) and Methuselah (father of the Sethite Lamech), with the same Russian word "Mafusal." The entry has been corrected: the liturgically correct category "forefather" and commemoration on the Sunday of Forefathers have been retained, but the biographical content has been entirely replaced with that of the genuine, Church-venerated Sethite Lamech, father of Noah. The fabricated commemoration "on Cheesefare Wednesday" has also been removed, as unconfirmed by any source — the same erroneous pattern already identified for other Old Testament righteous ones in this project.
