Venerable Lavrenty Chernigovsky

Venerable Laurence was born in 1868 in the village of Karylske, Krolevets district, Chernihiv province, into a poor but devout peasant family. He showed exceptional gifts early: by age 13 he had finished his schooling, worked as a teacher's assistant, sang in and directed church choirs (studying under a former regent of an imperial court choir), and became a skilled violinist and tailor, helping to support his family.

After his mother's death he sought monastic life, but his older brother initially prevented it. Together with his friend Simeon he traveled to Kyiv for the blessing of Elder Iona (was refused), then to Mount Athos, where he was received into the brotherhood, but an Athonite elder sent him back to Russia, saying he would be needed there.

Around 1905 he became choir director at the Rykhlov Nikolaev Monastery; his choir's renown drew the attention of Bishop Anthony (Sokolov), who invited him to direct the choir at the Trinity Cathedral in Chernihiv. In 1912 he was tonsured a monk with the name Laurence, ordained hierodeacon (1914) and hieromonk (1916). In 1923 he was secretly tonsured into the great schema by Schema-Igumen Gabriel of the Kiev Caves. In 1928 he was elevated to archimandrite by Metropolitan Michael.

After the Soviet closure of the Trinity monastery in the 1920s, he served for twenty years as priest of the Ilyin Church in Chernihiv, becoming renowned for his spiritual discernment and eldership, guiding many believers; during the underground years, his spiritual children secretly visited him at night.

During the German occupation of Chernihiv, the occupation authorities permitted the reopening of the Trinity-Ilyin Monastery. In 1941 Fr. Laurence founded a women's community at the monastery and helped revive the Nativity-of-the-Theotokos Domnitsky Monastery; nun spiritual children opened a women's community in honor of the Great Martyr Paraskeva on its site. During the occupation he headed two monastic communities (men's and women's) and personally directed the choir, introducing the unconventional liturgical arrangement of singers in a semicircle facing the altar.

Teachings and prophecies of the elder about the end times, compiled posthumously from the oral testimony of his spiritual children, have survived; researchers consider some of the later texts, circulated after 1994, to be unreliable later additions requiring cautious treatment.

He reposed on January 19, 1950, in Chernihiv; he is buried in the crypt beneath the Trinity Cathedral alongside seven bishops.

He was glorified by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) on August 22, 1993; added to the general church calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church on February 3, 2016.

His feast is kept on January 6/19 (day of repose).
