Hieromartyr Lev (Korobchuk) of Kholm

Hieromartyr Lev, secular name Lev Gavrilovich Korobchuk, was born in 1919 in Yaroslavl province, where his family had been evacuated during World War I; after the war the Korobchuks returned to the Kholm region, where the future hieromartyr's father headed an Orthodox parish in the village of Kulno, Biłgoraj district. He studied at secondary schools in Przemyśl and Lviv; from 1936-1939 he trained at the school of readers at Jableczyn Monastery.

In 1942 he was ordained a priest in Chełm by Archbishop Ilarion (Ohienko). He was assigned rector of the Orthodox parish in the village of Laskov, Hrubieszów district.

On March 10, 1944, he was killed together with about 200 of his parishioners in Laskov. Sources do not directly name the specific perpetrators of the massacre, but the coincidence of date and district with the well-documented tragedy in the neighboring village of Sahryń (the same day, the same district, by forces of the Home Army and Peasant Battalions) strongly suggests the same wave of anti-Orthodox violence by the Polish underground in Hrubieszów district.

He was glorified in the rank of hieromartyrs by the Polish Orthodox Church on June 7-8, 2003, at Chełm Cathedral, among the 8 Martyrs of Kholm and Podlasie (together with Archbishop Onuphrius of Kursk, Priest Paul Shvaiko and his wife Joanna, and others).

His feast is kept in the Synaxis of the Martyrs of Kholm and Podlasie (a movable date, the first Sunday of June).
