Confessor Lucius of Adrianople

Lucius is a historically attested figure, known from the "Ecclesiastical Histories" of Socrates Scholasticus and Sozomen (5th century). He became Bishop of Hadrianopolis (Thrace) in the mid-4th century, succeeding Bishop Eutropius, who had been deposed by the "Eusebian"/Arian party. Lucius fought against Arianism, for which he himself was deposed; he fled to Rome to seek support from the Nicene (Orthodox) party during the period of Arian ascendancy under Emperor Constantius II. He was later deposed again and, per Sozomen, died in prison or exile.

HONEST CAVEAT ON THE FEAST DATE: thorough verification found no liturgical source — not azbyka.ru, not days.pravoslavie.ru, not a dedicated menologion article in the Orthodox Encyclopedia — that fixes a specific commemoration day for this saint. The three dates previously listed in the entry ("August 26," "September 8," "February 26") were found on verification to be unconnected to this saint: August 26/September 8 is the feast of the Vladimir Icon and the commemoration of unrelated martyrs with no tie to Adrianople; February 26 falls during Great Lent and is connected to the commemoration of Hieromartyr Martinian of Caesarea. None of these dates is confirmed for Lucius of Adrianople — they are recognized as contamination/mistaken borrowing.

Since the historical existence and confessor's feat of Lucius are confirmed by authoritative church historians (Socrates, Sozomen, and a mention in the list of Adrianople's bishops in the Orthodox Encyclopedia), the entry has been kept published, but without a calendar date and without the status of "martyr" in the strict sense (he was not executed for his confession, but died in confinement/exile) — the category "confessor" has been assigned instead.
