Hierarch Macedonius II, Patriarch of Constantinople (495/496–511), a supporter of the moderate Orthodox interpretation of the "Henotikon"; exiled by Emperor Anastasius I for his disagreement with the emperor's Monophysite-leaning policy, he died in exile in Paphlagonia.
Hierarch Macedonius II held the patriarchal See of Constantinople in 495 or 496–511. He initially accepted Emperor Zeno's "Henotikon," understanding it from the position of the moderate Orthodox party, whereas Emperor Anastasius I (491–518) saw it as a tool for rapprochement with the Monophysites. When Anastasius finally sided fully with the Monophysite party and demanded the same of the patriarch, Hierarch Macedonius firmly refused to compromise the Orthodox teaching of the two natures in Christ, for which he was deposed in 511 and exiled to Paphlagonia, where he died in 516.
