Forefather

Forefather Mahalalel, Forefather

895 лет (по Быт. 5:17)

Forefather Mahalalel — son of Kenan and father of Jared, the fourth descendant of Adam through the line of Seth, who according to the Book of Genesis (5:12-17) lived 895 years; his name means "praise of God" in Hebrew.

Forefather Mahalalel (Hebrew Mahalal-El — "praise of God," "glory of God") — son of Kenan, born when his father was 70 (Gen. 5:12). At age 65 he became the father of Jared. After Jared's birth he lived another 830 years. All the days of his life were 895 years (Gen. 5:17).

He is also mentioned in the genealogy of Christ by the Evangelist Luke (Luke 3:37, as "Maleleel") and in the intertestamental Book of Enoch. He belongs to the antediluvian forefathers of the Sethite line, running from Adam through Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah to Lamech and Noah.

The Bible preserves no separate personal life or narrative of deeds for Forefather Mahalalel — like most of the antediluvian patriarchs in the Genesis 5 genealogy, he is named chiefly in the list of generations, which notes the length of his life and the fact of his fatherhood.

He is commemorated among the forefathers on the movable Sunday of the Holy Forefathers — the second Sunday before Nativity.
