Hierarch Mark, Pope of Rome — held the see for only about nine months (January-October 336), built two churches in Rome (including the Basilica of San Marco), and established the custom by which the Bishop of Ostia consecrates newly elected popes.
Hierarch Mark ascended the papal throne on January 18, 336, and governed the Roman Church for a brief term — about nine months. During this time he built two churches: one in Rome itself (later known as the Basilica of San Marco Evangelista), the other on the Via Salaria, at the Catacomb of Balbina (the Ardeatine Catacombs), where he himself was later buried.
He established the church rule by which a newly elected Pope of Rome is consecrated bishop specifically by the Bishop of Ostia (a port near Rome) — a custom that persisted for centuries.
He reposed on October 7, 336.
His feast is kept on October 7/20.
