Venerable Martha (Margaret) of Tambov, Aparina

Venerable Martha, secular name Martha Petrovna Aparina, was born around 1740 in Saransk (then Kazan province) to a noble family. From childhood she was drawn to monastic life, kept strict fasts, and prayed at length at night. Around 1780 the family moved to the town of Kirsanov.

Her mother would not allow her to enter a convent, so Martha led an ascetic life at home, gathering around her a community of like-minded women. During a pilgrimage to Kiev she was secretly tonsured a nun with the name Margaret. The community she founded later grew into the Kirsanov Tikhvin Convent of the Mother of God.

She spent her final years alternating between Kirsanov and Tambov, distributing alms and sewing church vestments. She reposed on September 1, 1800, during the Dormition Fast. After her death, chains and an iron cross were found on her body — evidence of the hidden ascetic labor she had carried her whole life. She appointed Tatiana Pakhomova as her successor in the community's spiritual leadership.

She was glorified in 1988; she is included in the Synaxis of Tambov Saints.

Her feast is kept on September 1/14 (repose); she is also commemorated in the Synaxis of Tambov Saints.

IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS: category blessed→venerable (all authoritative sources call her "venerable," not "blessed" — she was not a fool-for-Christ, but a monastic ascetic and founder of a community). The impossible era "15th-19th century" has been replaced with the precise dates (c. 1740-1800). The contaminated date "June 4/17" (matching verbatim the date of Righteous Martha of Bethany) has been replaced with the correct date of repose, September 1/14.
