Hieromartyr Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata — a zealous defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism, twice exiled, killed by a roof tile thrown by an Arian woman while installing an Orthodox bishop at Doliche.
Eusebius of Samosata was a 4th-century bishop and zealous defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism.
He refused to surrender the official record of Bishop Meletius of Antioch's election to Emperor Constantius II, offering both hands to be cut off rather than comply. Under Julian the Apostate he secretly ordained Orthodox bishops while disguised as a soldier. Exiled to Thrace by the Arian emperor Valens (373–378), he was recalled under Gratian and resumed his episcopal work.
Around 379/380, while in Doliche to install the Orthodox bishop Marinus, he was struck on the head by a roof tile thrown by an Arian woman and died of the wound, forgiving his killer before death.
His feast is kept on June 22/July 5.
