Martyr Hope (Nadezhda) — the middle of the widow Sophia's three daughters, who at age 10 endured torments (including an unharming trial by fire) and beheading in Rome under Emperor Hadrian, following her elder sister Faith.
Hope (Nadezhda) was the middle of three daughters of the widow Sophia, named for the chief Christian virtues: Faith (12), Hope (10), and Love (9). The family lived in Rome under Hadrian and openly professed Christ, for which all four were tried around 137 AD.
After her elder sister Faith (see the separate entry martyr_faith) was tortured and beheaded, it was Hope's turn: strengthened by her sister's example, the ten-year-old endured similar torments — including an unharming trial by fire — before being beheaded herself.
Their mother Sophia witnessed all three daughters' sufferings without being tortured herself, then buried them and died peacefully at their grave three days later.
Her feast is kept on September 17/30 — the same date as her sister Faith. Her sister Love and mother Sophia exist in the database as separate, not-yet-researched stubs for future cycles.
