Hierarch Leonidas, Bishop of Athens — died peacefully around 250; sometimes mistakenly identified with the martyr Leonidas of Corinth, leader of a separate group of women martyrs including the already-completed Martyr Galina (not to be confused).
Hierarch Leonidas held the see of Athens in the 3rd century and, according to the principal source of information about him, died peacefully around 250.
HONEST CAVEAT: very few sourced details survive about his ministry, life, or circumstances of death — the available sources contain only his name, see, and an approximate date; no extended narrative vita exists in the sources, and composing one would amount to invention.
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: the entry's image is directly inscribed "Leonidas, Bishop of Athens," confirming this specific identity. Some older sources identified him with the martyr Leonidas of Corinth — leader of a group of women martyrs (Chariessa, Nika, Galina, Kalisa, Nunechia, Basilissa, Theodora; Martyr Galina is already covered in this database as martyr_galina) — but modern reference sources (azbyka.ru, drevo-info.ru) explicitly state that the martyr Leonidas of Corinth is nowhere described as holding clerical rank, and therefore cannot be identified with this bishop. These two Leonidases are honestly distinguished here as separate, independent figures.
His feast is kept on April 15/28 (Greek tradition; not included in the current Russian Orthodox Church calendar).
