Venerable Matrona of Constantinople

IMPORTANT NOTE: the stub matrona_of_perge ("Matrona of Perge") has been merged into this entry — thorough checking found no independently attested saint by that name: "Perge in Pamphylia" is simply the BIRTHPLACE of Matrona of Constantinople herself, mistakenly treated as a separate identity during data entry.

Venerable Matrona was born in Perge in Pamphylia (Asia Minor) around 392 and was married to a wealthy man named Dometian; they had a daughter, Theodosia. Seeking to free herself from the "heavy yoke of marriage" that hindered her spiritual life, she entrusted her daughter to the care of the pious elder Susanna, cut her hair, dressed as a man, and entered the Constantinople monastery of Venerable Bassian under the name "Babylas," posing as a eunuch, and lived for years in strict silence and labor, concealing her secret.

Abbot Bassian received a revelation in a dream that "Babylas" was a woman; having confirmed the purity of her intent, he transferred her to a women's community in Emesa. Disciples gathered around her; in time, with Bassian's blessing, she returned to Constantinople, where she founded and led a women's monastery, worked healing miracles, and died at about one hundred years of age, after 75 years of monastic struggle.

Her feast is kept on November 9/22.
