Hierarch Myron, Bishop of Crete, Wonderworker — born a layman and farmer, who became Archbishop of Crete by the end of the persecutions, known for miracles of gentleness and power over the elements.
IMPORTANT CORRECTION: the category has been corrected from "righteous" to "hierarch" — Myron was an ordained bishop.
Hierarch Myron was born a layman near Knossos on Crete, worked as a farmer, was married, and from his youth was renowned for exceptional kindness and generosity to the poor. His best-known miracle: finding thieves at his threshing floor who had filled sacks with more grain than they could carry, he himself helped hoist the sacks onto their shoulders and forbade anyone to speak of it — an act that shamed the thieves into an honest life.
For his virtues he was ordained presbyter, and by the end of the Diocletianic persecutions (c. 305) was elevated to Bishop of Gortyna and Archbishop of Crete. He governed his flock with pastoral wisdom and worked further miracles — notably halting the flooding of the Triton River by crossing it as if on dry land, and on another occasion, unable to cross himself, sending a man with his episcopal staff to command the waters to part.
He died at a great age (nearly 100), probably around 350.
His feast is kept on August 8/21.
