Venerable Confessor Nikon (Belyaev), the last spiritual father of Optina Pustyn — the closest disciple of Elder Varsonofy, who continued to secretly guide his flock after the Bolshevik closure of the monastery, and died in exile in the North in 1931.
CATEGORY CORRECTION: the precise hagiographic title is "venerable confessor," distinct from "venerable martyr": the elder was not executed but died from the hardships of exile, which is what defines the confessor category.
Venerable Confessor Nikon, born Nikolai Mitrofanovich Belyaev, was born September 26, 1888, in Moscow to a pious merchant family. In 1907 he entered Optina Pustyn, becoming the closest disciple of Elder Varsonofy (Plikhankov). He was ordained hierodeacon in 1916, and hieromonk in 1917. After the Soviet closure of Optina Pustyn in 1923, Fr. Nikon remained nearby as the monastery's last spiritual father, continuing to secretly guide his spiritual children amid mounting persecution.
In June 1927 he was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment, then to exile in the Pinega region of the Northern Krai (Arkhangelsk area) — a harsh subarctic exile that broke his health. He died peacefully in exile on July 8, 1931, and was buried in the village cemetery of Valdokurye near Pinega.
He was locally glorified by Optina Pustyn in 1996, and canonized for universal veneration by the Jubilee Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000, with the precise title "venerable confessor" — marking the persecution he endured short of execution.
His feast is kept on June 25/July 8; also in the Synaxis of the Optina Elders (October 11/24).
