Martyr Orestes of Tyana (Cappadocia)

IMPORTANT IDENTITY CLARIFICATION: Orestes of Tyana is an independent, separate saint, NOT identical to the Martyr Orestes of Sebaste already present in this database (of the Five Martyrs of Sebaste group — Eustratius, Auxentius, Eugene, Mardarius, and Orestes, feast December 13/26, executed together on a heated iron grate). This is confirmed by the database itself: the card martyr_orestes already contains an explicit note about a rejected hypothesis of merging with Orestes of Tyana — the Tyana physician's execution is fundamentally different (nails driven into his heels, dragged by a wild horse, feast November 10/23) compared to the joint execution of the Sebaste martyrs on a heated grate on December 13/26. Independent research confirms this.

Martyr Orestes was a skilled and devout Christian physician living in Tyana, Cappadocia, in the late 3rd century, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. When the military commander Maximinus was sent to Tyana to suppress the widespread Christianity there, Orestes was among the first Christians brought before him for trial and openly confessed his faith in the crucified and risen Christ. Enraged, Maximinus ordered him imprisoned seven days without food or water, then subjected to torture: forty soldiers took turns beating him with whips, sticks, and ox-sinew straps, after which he was tormented with fire. Finally nails were driven into his heels and he was tied to a wild, unbroken horse, which dragged him over rocky ground until he died, in 304.

According to tradition, his relics were initially cast into the sea, but centuries later a monk was granted a vision of the martyr himself, asking that his full Life be recorded and preserved.

His feast is kept on November 10/23.
