Venerable Petroniu (Tănase) the Prodromite

DOUBLE CRITICAL CORRECTION: (1) the previously listed FOUR crammed dates ("June 29 / February 22 / January 18 / July 12") in the original stub turned out to be unreliable — of these, only "February 22" approximately corresponds to a real event (date of death, Feb 22, 2011), but is not the exact church commemoration date; the other three dates correspond to no event in the saint's life and are contamination. The correct and only feast date is February 24 N.S. (February 11 O.S.), his burial date. (2) the category "hieromartyr" was erroneous — the saint died a natural death in advanced old age, weeks after retiring as abbot; there is no martyrdom in his life. The category has been corrected to "venerable."

IMPORTANT FINDING: the saint was canonized by the Ecumenical (Constantinople) Patriarchate very recently — on August 31, 2025, at the initiative of the Romanian Patriarchate, together with the monk Dionisie (Ignat) of Colciu; his relics were ceremonially exhumed at the Prodromu Skete on April 27, 2023, as part of the canonization process.

Venerable Petroniu (secular name Tănase) was born May 23, 1914, in the village of Farcașa, Neamț County, Romania. He became a monk at Neamț Monastery, received theological training, and studied mathematics and philosophy in Bucharest. From 1937 he lived at Antim Monastery in Bucharest, organizing the monastery library; he was associated with the "Rugul Aprins" ("Burning Bush") spiritual movement. In 1978 he moved to Mount Athos, to the Romanian Skete of Prodromu, and in 1984 was elected its abbot, leading it for over 25 years; he is widely credited with reviving Romanian Athonite monastic life. He reposed on February 22, 2011, and was buried according to Athonite custom on February 24.
