Hierarch Proclus, Patriarch of Constantinople (434–446/447), a disciple of St. John Chrysostom and a zealous defender of Orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius; author of a famous homily on the Theotokos that underlay the decisions of the Third Ecumenical Council.
Hierarch Proclus was a disciple of St. John Chrysostom, who ordained him first deacon and then presbyter. In 434 he was elevated to the patriarchal See of Constantinople, which he held until his death at an advanced age in 446 or 447. He zealously combated the heresy of Nestorius, who rejected calling the Most Holy Virgin Mary the Theotokos; Hierarch Proclus's famous homily on the Theotokos became one of the foundations for the Orthodox decisions of the Third Ecumenical Council (431). He earned universal respect for his work in establishing good order in all church affairs.
